Admission to Doctoral Studies
Admission to the PhD in Applied Linguistics: Discourse in English Language Teaching, Testing or Translation/Interpreting
If you are interested in the PhD in Applied Linguistics program, you can submit your application at any time during the year. Applications are processed in the order received. Each complete application packet is reviewed individually with both academic performance and professional work experience taken into consideration.
The academic year normally begins in late September and academic terms run for 12 weeks.
Admission Procedures
Your application package must include the following:
- PhD Application Form: Please print the application form, complete it and mail it to the admissions office. Be sure to complete the essay outlining your values, aims and ambitions for the future.
- Official Transcripts: Ask your college/university to mail your official transcript directly to Hellenic American University or submit it with your application in a sealed envelope.
- Recommendation letters from three individuals who can provide information about your academic and professional abilities and attest to your capacity for graduate study. Each referee should complete a recommendation form, seal it in an envelope, and sign his or her name across the envelope seal.
- Sample of academic writing (published or unpublished).
- A current résumé.
- Evidence of English Language Proficiency: The language of instruction in the PhD program is English. Evidence of proficiency in English is required of all students. If English is not your native language you are requested to submit evidence of English language proficiency.
- Evidence of other Language proficiency: applicants for the Translation Strand must supply evidence of proficiency in a language other than English.
- A copy of your passport or I.D. card and two passport size photographs.
- A non-refundable application fee of € 100.
Interview: Every application packet is reviewed individually. Therefore, it is important that we meet our students in person. If this is not feasible we will contact you and speak to you over the phone. The interview will be conducted by a faculty member from the Department and will evolve around your academic and professional capabilities and potential.
Evidence of English Language Proficiency
Acceptable forms of evidence include:
- An undergraduate or graduate degree from an institution in which English is the language of instruction.
- Official results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) taken within the last two years with a minimum score of 250 (CBT) or 100 (iBT) or 600 on the paper-based TOEFL.
- University of Michigan or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English.
- Other evidence of proficiency will be reviewed individually.
All application material should be either the original documents or notarized copies. Documents which are not in English must be accompanied by certified English translations.
All applications and support materials are retained by Hellenic American University. Once submitted, no materials will be returned to the applicant.

If the university later discovers that false statements have been made or material information withheld or omitted, it reserves the right to withdraw an offer of admission or to terminate registration.
The Hellenic American University Student Records Policy protects the privacy of student academic records. This policy is consistent with United States Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232G; 34 CFR Part 99); however, it does not abrogate any of the requirements of, or rights under, the terms of the 2472/97 Data Protection Act, enforced by the Hellenic Data Protection Authority.
