A Message from the President

The direction in which education starts a person
will determine his or her future life.
Plato, The Republic

The world we have inherited is a global marketplace of ideas, perspectives, ambitions, and interests. At no time in world history has the educated mind been of more value. Leadership and meaningful action in the societies of today and the future demand the capacity to see diversity of thought and culture as a strength to be harnessed to better the world.

Hellenic American University embraces Plato’s philosophy as its own. We recognize the University’s awesome responsibility for setting the direction of our students’ lives, providing the motive and the means through which their ambitions may be realized and in which their contributions to society take on forms of unimagined influence.

Ours is a truly global university. We are a community of students and teachers committed to making a positive difference in the world through the training of discipline minds, open and informed inquiry, and a dedication to the hard work demanded of these aspirations.

Global in orientation, Hellenic American University is also recognized as an American institution of higher learning, one which draws its sustenance both from the traditions and values of American higher education and, with its location in Athens, the riches of Greek civilization in philosophy, art and culture. It is precisely this mix and fusion of cultures and perspectives which make our University unique on the world stage.

Our relative youth is a distinct advantage. We have been able to create a university for this century at its advent. We have built upon the foundations of excellence in higher education that are the legacy of the ages. We have simultaneously taken full advantage of the innovations in the science of education, in technology, and in cross-cultural understanding that are recreating the delivery of higher education today.

Whether you pursue a graduate or undergraduate degree, affiliate with one of our Institutes, or participate in a research project or conference, you will find at Hellenic American University a vibrant academic and service culture, one intensely interested in making a certain difference in the lives of our students and the larger society.

I welcome you to Hellenic American University and invite you to become part of a community devoted to the highest standards of teaching, research, and service. As educators, we take justifiable pride in fashioning at the University the sort of learning community that Plato would appreciate, that generations since have emulated, and upon which modern society must depend.
