Bachelor of Music (BM)

Hellenic American University is collaborating with Musical Horizons Conservatory (Athens) to offer a bachelor’s degree in music. The Bachelor of Music program is designed to provide a specialization in music performance or in theory and composition within the context of a broad liberal arts education. All performance and practice courses and exercises will be conducted at the Musical Horizons Conservatory. All other courses and related activities will take place at the University. Graduation requires students to complete 28 courses/ 84 credits in the degree area in addition to the 14 courses/42 credits in general education.

The curriculum is a sequence of appropriate subjects and courses leading to competence in the students’ chosen field of study. The curriculum includes:

General Education Courses (42 credits / 14 courses)

The general education component exposes the students to a broad range of liberal arts courses. The program has been designed to establish solid English writing and oral skills, as well as standard American liberal arts requirements.

Core Music Curriculum (45 credits / 15 courses)

As students work through their general education program, they will also commence the required Core of their degree program. This part of the curriculum will equip them with foundation courses as well as discipline-specific courses that will provide them with the knowledge and competencies essential to a successful career in music and/or prepare them for graduate studies in the field.

Majors (39 credits / 13 courses)

In consultation with their faculty mentors, students will select a major from the offerings – Music Performance (Piano, Strings, Voice, or Conducting) or Theory and Composition.

Capstone Project (3 credits / 1 course)

In their senior year, students will engage in a capstone project, which gives them the opportunity to review and apply relevant theories, tools, and techniques which they have acquired during their entire course of studies.

  • Performance majors will organize and give a recital in their major instrument
  • Theory and Composition majors will organize and conduct a performance featuring their own composition(s).
