Curriculum Structure

Core Curriculum (6 courses, 18 credits)

The core courses provide a strong foundation in Applied Linguistics and introduce students to the theoretical and conceptual framework of the discipline as well as equipping them with the basic research tools that are necessary for systematic study and research in a particular area of interest within their chosen Strand

Concentration Curriculum (4 courses, 12 credits)

Students must complete the two introductory courses (Introduction to Applied Linguistics, and Language and Communication) before proceeding to the strand courses which can be taken alongside the core curriculum courses. The three specialized strands include: TESOL, Testing and Translation. The concentration track gives students the opportunity to pursue areas of particular career interest. However, students are not required to take all their concentration courses in one Strand.

Elective Seminars (2 courses, 6 credits)

Elective Seminars give students the opportunity to explore in more depth issues related to their concentration area or the field of Applied Linguistics in general. The list of elective seminars may change every year depending on staff availability and student demand.

Dissertation (3 credits)

At the end of the instructional part of the course students will be required to write a 12,000 word dissertation on a topic that will be agreed with their supervisor. Advice and guidance is given in formulating and refining the research topic, conducting research, analyzing data, literature review and documentation of sources. The dissertation offers students the opportunity to carry out independent research in an area of their interest and apply the knowledge and the skills they have acquired to the investigation of a particular issue or problem.
