The Hellenic American University requires each applicant to submit a package of materials to be considered as part of their application. The following information outlines the required material and provides further explanations relating to formal documents.
Checklist for Applicants
The following are required of all freshmen applicants:
- A completed admissions application form
- Official Diploma, transcripts, and certificates of all secondary schools, colleges and universities attended. These documents may be sent directly from the institution to the Admissions Office of the University or the applicant may receive them in a sealed envelope and submit them with the application. All documents must be officially translated into English.
- Evidence of English Language Proficiency
- A high school Diploma and/or transcripts from an institution whose language of instruction is English.
- International Baccalaureate Certificate or Diploma.
- A TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 151-217 (CBT TOEFL), 52-82 (iBT TOEFL) or 475-559 (paper based score) for conditional acceptance or a minimum test score of 218 (CBT TOEFL), 83 (iBT TOEFL) or 560 (paper based score) and above for unconditional acceptance.
- A minimum TOEIC score of 510 for conditional acceptance and 760 for unconditional acceptance.
- A passing score of the HAU Advanced Level Certificate in English (ALCE).
- Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English.
- University of Michigan Certificate of Proficiency in English.
- Other evidence of proficiency will be evaluated individually.
Applicants must make their own arrangements for the examinations and have the results forwarded to the University. Please contact our Admissions Office for further information.
- Two letters of recommendation from school officials where the applicant has most recently attended.
- Two current passport size photographs
- A copy of your passport/national identity card
- A non-refundable application fee of € 30. This fee may be applied to first semester tuition for those who are accepted and enroll in the program.
- Personal interview
A personal interview is required of every applicant who appears to meet the standards for admission. International students who cannot be interviewed in Athens will be interviewed by telephone.
International Applicant Information
All international students are required to complete the necessary public/government documents to facilitate their student visa before arriving in Greece. Students must also complete the necessary Residence Permit paperwork. For additional details on the legal requirements for international applicants, you may also contact the University Admissions Office.
International applicants are urged to register early for the appropriate TOEFL/TOEIC test administrations. Applicants make their own arrangements for the examinations and must have the results forwarded to the University.

International Student Visa & Residence Permit Directions
The following instructions are for ALL international students applying for Student Visas and/or Residence Permits**
VISAS
Applying for a student visa before leaving your country and before you travel to Greece:
Collect the following documents and mail them to us:
- Photocopy of passport (stamped/notarized)
- Three recent color photos (matte & passport size)
- Deposit tuition fees for at least one year to the University’s bank account. The minimum payment for undergraduate students (Bachelor level) is the cost for three courses per term which is nine courses per year (please see the program catalog for the cost per course, multiply that by nine, and add the application fee); for graduate students (Masters level) the cost is for four courses for the year (please see your catalog for the cost per course and multiply that by four and add the application fee.)
- Proof that you have the financial resources to cover the tuition for the entire program (i.e., a notarized/stamped statement from a bank or country’s internal revenue service). Μake THREE copies -- one for the student visa, one for the residence permit, and one for your own files.
- Certificate/Verification of health status for deceases characterized as dangerous for the Public Health by the International Health Association.
- Certificate/Verification of not having a penal record.
- English language certificate
- Travel insurance valid at least for three months
Once the papers mentioned above are RECEIVED, we will work with you to complete the following:
- Application Forms for the Prefecture (“Nomarhia”/Νομαρχία) -- the University provides this forms to students. It must be completed by our staff (with your help and your parents’ signature) since the form is in Greek.
- We declare to the Prefecture that you will have health insurance. PLEASE NOTE: All students who do not have health insurance MUST apply for this once they are in Greece. You will obtain a certificate from a private Greek insurance company indicating that you are insured for pharmaceutical & hospital care for the duration of your entire graduate or undergraduate program. Again, the University does not provide the actual certificate but only a declaration that you will have insurance coverage when you come to live in Greece.
- Three (3) letters from the University concerning the following [make TWO copies -- one for the Prefecture (Nomarhia) and one for the respective Embassy]:
- the tuition fees of first academic year
- tuition fees for the entire program
- letter requesting a student visa
We submit ALL of these papers to the Prefecture (Nomarhia) and get them back stamped with a tracking number. We then mail the whole package to you so that you may take it to the Greek Embassy in your country. The Embassy may request additional documents. PLEASE check with the Greek Embassy in your country.

Conditional Admissions
Under certain circumstances, students who demonstrate excellent potential for success but who otherwise do not meet all entrance requirements may be considered for conditional admission. Students admitted in this manner must achieve a Grade Point Average (GPA) of a B (3.0) during the first two terms of courses taken at HAU, and successfully complete any outstanding conditions in order to be officially admitted and continue in the program.

Student Records Privacy Policy
The Hellenic American University Student Records Policy protects the privacy of student academic records. This policy is consistent with United States Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232G; 34 CFR Part 99); however, it does not abrogate any of the requirements of, or rights under, the terms of the 2472/97 Data Protection Act, enforced by the Hellenic Data Protection Authority. Tuition and Fees
The cost of the Bachelor’s program for the entering class of 2008 is € 465 per course. The cost of books and other materials that are required for each course are not included in the tuition.
Tuition is due and payable to the University at the beginning of each term. In certain cases the University may agree to a payment plan that extends over the term. All students who are delinquent in their tuition fees at the end of a term will not be allowed to continue in the program until their fees are current. |
