Hellenic American University takes pride in its faculty. The full time faculty members and the academic administrators who hold regular part time faculty positions are committed to research as well as to direct teaching. All are mentors to our students: their mission is to foster the intellectual and professional development and the success of our students whom they are helping to become self-directed, life-long learners.

Provost

Thomas M. Rocco, Ph.D

Dr. Rocco earned his doctorate in Philosophy from Catholic University of America in 1970, with a dissertation on The Ideal Observer Theory of Ethical Statements. He was a full-time, tenured assistant professor in the department of philosophy and religious studies at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire until 1977, when he changed careers from teaching to academic administration in experimental programs.

From 1977-1983 he served in a variety of roles at the College of New Rochelle, School of New York metropolitan area. Among these positions were the director of the Core Program in the Humanities, funded by the NEH, and associate dean responsible for overseeing the academic program of the School at all seven of its campuses and sites. For the next fifteen years, he served as dean and then senior dean in SUNY Empire State College. In the latter role, he was responsible for a portfolio including corporate programs, government contact programs, and international programs. Dr. Rocco was awarded tenure on the faculty of Empire State. Dr. Rocco then assumed the presidency of the Leadership Institute of Seattle, Washington, and the chairmanship of the Leadership Consulting Corporation. He was then president of Granite State College of the University System of New Hampshire. He has also been chair of the Post Secondary Education Commission of the State of New Hampshire, president of the Alliance, an association of experimental colleges serving adult learners and vice president of Collegiate Enterprise Solutions, and academic consulting firm.

Professor Theodore Antoniou

Theodore Antoniou joined the faculty of Hellenic American University in 2006 after being awarded Professor Emeritus status at Boston University. He is one of the most eminent and prolific contemporary music artists and has had a long career as composer, conductor and professor of composition at the University of Utah, Philadelphia Music Academy, Stanford and Boston Universities. He studied violin, voice, and composition at the National Conservatory in Athens, with further studies in conducting and composition at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich, and the International Music Center in Darmstadt. After holding teaching positions at Stanford University, the University of Utah, and the Philadelphia Musical Academy, he became professor of composition at Boston University in 1978. He has been recognized with ASCAP Awards for several years, and in 1991 he was awarded the Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching by Boston University. In 2003 the Ionian University conferred upon him an honorary doctorate. In 2004 the University of Vienna and the Alfred Toepfer Foundation of Hamburg, Germany, awarded him the prestigious 2004 Herder Prize, in recognition of his contribution to mutual cultural understanding and piece among the countries of south-eastern Europe. Theodore Antoniou’s works are numerous and varied in nature, ranging from operas and choral works to chamber music, from film and theatre music to solo instrumental pieces - his scores for theatre and film music alone number more than a hundred and fifty compositions.

Demetris Bogiatzis, Ph.D.

Dr. Demetris Bogiatzis holds a BA in English Literature from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, an MA in English from Winthrop University (USA), and a Ph.D. in English from Texas Christian University (USA). During his post-graduate studies in the USA, he served as a tutor at the Winthrop University writing center and taught composition at Texas Christian University, where he held a Teaching Assistantship. In Greece, he worked at New York College for seven years, where he taught a number of writing and literature courses and was the Head of the English Department from 2001 to 2006. He has also taught at the Technological Institute of Pireaus and at the Hellenic American Union, where he is an English teacher, test developer, and oral examiner. He has published articles on rhetoric and Modern British literature in American journals. He has also written two EFL textbooks and co-authored one more.

Sofia Daskou, Ph.D.

Dr. Daskou has received her Ph.D in Marketing from the University of Strathclyde, in Glasgow, UK. She holds an MSc in Marketing from the University of Stirling and a BSc in Business Administration from the American College of Greece. She has teaching experience as a TA from the University of Stirling and the University of Strathclyde. She has served as a lecturer in the Marketing Department of Strathclyde University for a period of 6 years, where her responsibilities focused on issues of program and course development, directing the faculty research seminars series and the International Marketing Consulting program of the MSc in International Marketing. She is also appointed as External Examiner of the undergraduate program of Kingston University, and is a member of the Editorial Board of the academic Journal of Marketing Intelligence and Planning. She is also the Director of Community Relations of the Athens Institute of Education and Research (ATINER) and has been a contributor to the ESRC-funded Seminar Series on Relationship Marketing, as a conference organiser. Her research work has appeared in the British Academy of Marketing Proceedings, in the European Marketing Academy Proceedings, and in various journals such as the Journal of Relationship Marketing, Journal of Financial Services Marketing, The Global Business & Economics Review. Her research interests focus on issues of Relationship Marketing, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Consumer issues, Business relationships, and Service Quality.

Lambros Ekonomou, Ph.D.

Dr. Lambros Ekonomou received a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Electrical Engineering and Electronics in 1997 and a Master of Science in Advanced Control in 1998 from University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (U.M.I.S.T.), United Kingdom. In 2001 and 2006 he graduated with a Master of Philosophy and a Ph.D. respectively from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (N.T.U.A.), Greece. He also holds a Bachelor Degree in Economics (2006) from University of Piraeus, Greece. Dr. Ekonomou has worked as an Electrical and Computer Engineer with various companies including Hellenic Public Power Corporation S.A., J&P (Overseas) Ltd and Hellenic Aerospace Industry S.A. From June 2007 he is Assistant Professor in the Hellenic American University. He is member of the IEE, IEEE, CIGRE, Technical Chamber of Greece and Economic Chamber of Greece. He is the author of more than 30 papers published in international journals and conferences.

Damian Giannakis, M. Phil.

Mr. Giannakis holds a Master’s of Philosophy with a major in International Marketing from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, UK. He is currently pursuing his PHD program in the same University. He has also earned a “How to Train the Trainer” diploma from the Thames Valley University in London, UK.
His research interests focus on issues of Relationship Marketing, HRM, Consumer issues and Business relationships.
He has a business experience of 20 years. For 17 years he was working in sales/marketing managerial positions in the insurance industry and in Greek and international capital markets. Mr. Giannnakis has also served as a business consultant for several corporations in Greece.
He has been employed as a full time faculty member by the Hellenic American University since 2004.
Mr. Giannakis has been actively involved over the last 16 years in organizing and delivering courses and seminars in major educational institutions. He was for three years the Director of Marketing at the University and continues to serve on the Marketing Committee; he teaches courses on Marketing and Management in the MBA and PMBA courses.

Nicholas Harkiolakis, Ph.D.

Dr. Harkiolakis holds a PhD degree in Computer Science from University of Athens and has undergraduate and graduate degrees in Physics and Aerodynamics. In the past he served as an Associate Professor and Chair of the Computer Science Department of the University of LaVerne - Athens Campus where he developed the programs of Master's in Business Information Technology and the MBA - IT concentration, chairing both. Currently he is Professor of Information Technology and Director of Research at the Hellenic American University. Professionally he has 25 years experience in development and implementation of business information systems and he continues to consult in that area. His research interests extend to the areas of management information systems, optimization, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, and simulation and modelling.

Eileen Hoesly, MBA

Ms. Hoesly received a B.A. in Political Science with a Minor in Business Administration from Portland State University, and earned an MBA with a Concentration in Marketing from the same university. She was a visiting scholar at the Imperial College School of Management in London and taught for the University of Maryland for 15 years. She held the rank of Full Professor in the School of Business and Global Studies at the University of La Verne Athens Campus, where she was also the Chair of the Undergraduate Business Program for ten years. Throughout her academic career she has been highly involved in program development and has taught mainly in the areas of Marketing, Corporate Finance, and Strategic Management.

Apart from her academic career, Ms. Hoesly has been active in consulting for a variety of firms in different industries, including multinationals such as AT&T and Eli Lilly, and served as the President of the Board of Education for a leading American international school for several years. She is currently the Registrar and Director of Admissions of the University; she is also the Chair of the Committee on Interdisciplinary and International Programs, and a member of the Business Faculty.

Juliane House, Ph. D.

Dr. House is Chair and Professor of Applied Linguistics Programs at HAUniv; previously, she was Professor of Applied Linguistics at Hamburg University and co-director of the German Science Foundation’s Research Centre on Multilingualism, where she co-ordinates the Multilingual Communication Group and is Principal investigator of three projects on translation and interpreting. Her research interests include translation theory, contrastive pragmatics, discourse analysis, English as a lingua franca and intercultural communication. She has written and edited many articles and books, among them A Model for Translation Quality Assessment, Translation Quality Assessment: A Model Revisited, Interlingual and Intercultural Communication, Cross-Cultural Pragmatics, Misunderstanding in Social Life, Multilingual Communication, Translation and the Construction of Identity, Translatory Action and Intercultural Communication.

Adrianne Kalfopoulou, Ph.D.

Adrianne Kalfopoulou has earned her degrees from Brown University (BA, Comparative Literature), New York University (MA in English Literature with a concentration in Creative Writing), and Aristotle University (PhD in American Literature). She is the author of a scholarly work, The Untidy House, a discussion of female discourses and the ideology of the American Dream(Mellen Press 2000), a poetry collection, Wild Greens (Red Hen Press 2002), and a memoir Broken Greek (Plain View Press 2006). She has taught American and World Literature courses as well as Creative Writing in several universities including the University of LaVerne's Athens branch campus and the University of Edinburgh's International Summer Schools Program. Panagiotis Karampelas, Ph.D.

Dr. Karampelas holds a PhD in Electronic Engineering from the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK. He also holds a Master of Science from the Department of Informatics, Kapodistrian University of Athens and a Bachelor degree in Mathematics from the same University. His field of interest is Human-Computer Interaction and Internet Technologies and more specifically User Interface Design, Usability Evaluation as well as Digital Libraries and Web Development. He has worked for three and a half years as an associate researcher in the Foundation for Research & Technology-Hellas (FORTH), Institute of Computer Science and several years as a user interface designer and usability expert in several IT companies designing and implementing large-scale information systems. He has also participated in many European research projects and published a number of articles in his major areas of interests. Presently, he is an Assistant Professor of Information Technology and Chair of Information Technology Programs at the Hellenic American University.

Marios Katsioloudes, Ph.D.

Marios I. Katsioloudes, holds a PhD in Strategic Management and International Business from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, USA. He is currently Dean of Business programs at Hellenic American University. He has taught in a number of Universities in the United States, such as Coastal Carolina University, West Chester University of Pennsylvania, Villanova University and Saint Joseph’s University. His last appointment was with the American University of Sharjah in the UAE. He has taught in Cyprus and Greece as well and still holds visiting faculty appointments to the University of Nicosia, University of Cyprus, the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania, respectively, and the Galen University in Belize in Central America. His teaching, research publications, and consulting revolve around the strategic management process in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors. He has published six books on strategic management and international business and authored and co-authored over twenty five articles in academic journals. Furthermore, he has presented and published over 50 papers in national and international conferences. He has provided consulting services to many organizations, especially small-medium enterprises (SMEs) in the United States, Cyprus, Greece, Libya, Belize, and the United Arab Emirates.

In addition to his twenty five years as a faculty member, he has served as an Associate Dean, MBA Director, and Director of the Honors Program in some of the universities mentioned above.

Christina Kkona, Ph.D.

Dr. Kkona is Assistant Professor at the Hellenic American University. She received a B.A in Philosophy & Education, with a major in Philosophy, from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She holds an M.A and a PhD in History and Semiotics of Text and Image from the University Paris VII-Denis Diderot, France. Her main research interests extend to literature, cinema, philosophy and psychoanalysis.

Despina Konstas, Ph.D.

Dr. Konstas obtained a B.A in Psychology from New York University, and a M.A and Ph.D. in Clinical and School Psychology from Hofstra University, New York. Currently Dr. Konstas is a full time Assistant Professor of Psychology at Hellenic American University. She previously worked as a Staff Psychologist at Hofstra University Student Counseling Services providing psychological services to students as well as to the university community. She taught courses as an adjunct professor of psychology at the same university at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. As a licensed psychologist (in the state of New York) she maintained a private clinical practice providing psychotherapy to children, adolescents, and adults with various psychological disorders. Her primary research interests include addictions, suicide prevention, and various issues concerning university students.

George Koutoulas, Ph.D.

Dr. Koutoulas holds a PhD in Economics from Concordia University, Canada. He was an Assistant Professor of Finance in the Faculty of Management at the University of Lethbridge, Canada, for ten years. Prior to that, he was a lecturer at Concordia University for five years where he taught in the Department of Economics and the Faculty of Commerce. He has published in reputable academic journals. His research interests are in asset pricing determination, valuation and financial market pricing integration. He has served as a financial adviser on the Board of Directors of Goldtex Resources, a precious metal exploration firm. Currently, he is the Coordinator of the MBA & PMBA programs and Director of Budget & Finance of the Hellenic American University in Athens, where he lectures in Economics and Finance courses.

Jiorgis Kritsotakis, Ph.D.

Dr. Kritsotakis is an Assistant Professor of Strategy and Management with the Hellenic American University.
Before joining HAU, Dr. Kritsotakis was a senior consultant with Accenture's Global Service Line of Strategy and Organization, specializing in the converging Communications and High Tech industries. Dr. Kritsotakis’ work was focused on enabling client organizations to achieve high performance through the design and management of enterprise-wide organizational change. Prior to his strategy consulting years, Dr. Kritsotakis lectured for four years on strategy and organizational change at the School of Management of the University of St. Andrews. While at St. Andrews, Dr. Kritsotakis’ research focused on the process of Strategy Making and examined the dynamic interplay between managerial action and broader organizational contexts.
When not working, he enjoys playing golf, listening to verismo opera and reading non-fiction books.
Dr. Kritsotakis holds a BSc (Marketing Management), MBA (New Venture Management) and a Ph.D. in Strategic Change.

Ioanna Laniti, Ph.D.

Dr. Laniti received a B.A in Economics and Psychology at Keele University, UK and a M.A and Ph.D. in Clinical and School Psychology at Hofstra University, New York. Dr. Laniti is presently a full time Assistant Professor of the Hellenic American University. Prior to that and for the last three years she had been working as a clinical psychologist in different settings of the mental health system in the US. Her research interests and experience extend primarily to the areas of anxiety disorders and cross cultural psychology.

Alexander Nikolaou, Ph.D.

Dr. Nikolaou received a Ph.D. in English from the University of Birmingham, UK on a partial scholarship. He also holds an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from the same university and a B.A. in English Literature from the American College of Greece. Dr. Nikolaou is presently the Coordinator of the MA AL program, and Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics and English at the Hellenic American University. Prior to that, he had been teaching EAP/ESP courses at various private tertiary institutions as well as general English language courses both in Greece and the UK. In his previous position at MM Publications he was involved in developing ELT materials and conducting teacher training seminars in Greece and abroad. He is also a certified oral examiner for the Cambridge ESOL and Edexcel exams. He has presented papers at successive TESOL Greece conventions. His main research interests are motivation in second language learning, the role of English as a global language, language policies and critical discourse analysis.

Despina Prinia, Ph.D.

Despina Prinia is assistant professor of Business and General Studies; she received a Ph.D. from Columbia University, in Political Communication and Strategic Media; she had further studies in Crisis Management at Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government. She started her career as a journalist, and then she worked for several Advertising Agencies during the last ten years. During the Olympic Games, she was the IOC Communication Coordinator, at the Media Press Center. She has worked for many politicians as a Press & P.R. Agent and as a Campaign Coordinator. She holds a Biennale Prize for short film script writing, and she has won many equestrian championships, in Britain and South East Africa.

Cheryl Traiger, Ph.D.

Dr. Traiger holds a Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching (SLAT) from the University of Arizona, and also holds an M.A. from the same university in English Language and Linguistics. She has taught EFL and ESL courses in the United States, Mexico, Hungary and China at the university and community college levels. Dr. Traiger is presently an Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics and General Education at Hellenic American University.  Her research interests focus on Discourse Analysis, the Semiotics of Tourism, Identity and Ideology, Intercultural Communication, and World Englishes.

Leonidas Tzonis, Ph.D.

Dr. Tzonis holds a Ph.D. from the Newcastle Business School. He has over five years of lecturing experience in economics and finance including being a lecturer at Durham University, a visiting lecturer at the Singapore Institute of Management and a distance learning tutor for SOAS (University of London). He holds a M.Sc. in Finance and Investment and a PG Certificate in Higher Education from the University of Durham, and a B.Sc. in Economics and Business Finance from Brunel University. His research interests lie in the area of Mergers and Acquisitions, Behavioural Finance and Corporate Financial Decisions. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Finance at the Hellenic American University.

Evangelos Zirintsis, Ph.D.

Dr Evangelos Zirintsis is assistant professor in the Information Technology and Business programs of the University. He holds a BSc in Applied Informatics (1995) - University of Macedonia, Greece & a PhD in Software Engineering (2000) - University of St Andrews, Scotland. Following the completion of his PhD, he participated in several research projects ranging from application of software engineering concepts to designing, implementing and testing Location Aware Services systems through the use of GPS, GPRS and Bluetooth technologies. Throughout his academic years he lectured at the University of St Andrews on his favourite subject: Software Engineering.
In 2004 he joined Capgemini, one of the biggest IT consultancy companies in the world, as a Software Engineer. Throughout his career there he performed several roles, such as Senior Software Engineer, Senior Designer, Architect, Configuration Manager, Systems Analyst, and Project Manager.

Part-time faculty

Athanasios Bakolas, Ph.D.

Dr. Bakolas received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Columbia University in the City of New York. His field of concentration is International Relations Theory and more specifically Game Theory, the scientific examination of cooperative behaviour as relates to the arena of a state’s external affairs. He has conducted research at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York and at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Dr. Bakolas has been a political and media advisor for the past ten years. He has worked on numerous political campaigns in the United States and Greece.

Barbara K. Kondilis, MSW, MPH

Ms. Kondilis holds a Master of Public Health and a Master of Social Work from Boston University and a B.A. in Psychology from Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts. While at Simmons she served as a Commuter Student Advisor, and served as the Coordinator of the Career Office at B.U. School of Social Work. She is a licensed clinical social worker (in MA) with over six years experience specializing in individual, family, and group therapy. Her work settings have included hospitals, schools, health clinics, a health maintenance organization, federal and state institutions in the United States in the areas of public health, mental health, research, and education/training. As a public health professional, she was involved in working for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, as well as coordinating a statewide diabetes quality improvement initiative, and spearheading several health communication initiatives. Her professional interests include health education, communication, quality improvement, community and individual empowerment, policy, and diversity awareness. She directs a health literacy project and lectures for the health care management program.

Vassiliki Kourbani, MA

Ms. Vassiliki Kourbani, Writing Centre Academic Coordinator at the Hellenic American Union and the Hellenic American University, is a graduate of the University of Athens (B.A), the University of Chicago (M.A in Theoretical Linguistics), the University of Illinois (M.A in Applied Linguistics) and a Ph.D candidate (University of Athens). She has been teaching linguistics and composition courses at the American College of Greece since 1991. Since 2004, she coordinates the Writing Centre at the HAU and conducts research on innovative educational programs.

Christine Irvine-Niakaris, MA

Ms. Irvine-Niakaris is Director of the MAAL Program and Director of the Center for Applied Linguistics and Language Studies, Hellenic American Union. She has an MA in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, University of Reading, UK and is currently studying for an EdD at the University of Bristol, UK. Mrs. Niakaris has more than twenty years experience in teaching and teacher training in Greece, UK and the British Council, Bahrain. She has taught graduate courses as a visiting professor at Saint Michael's College, Vermont, US for ten consecutive summers 1990 – 2000, and is one of the founders of the Saint Michael’s College/Hellenic American Union cooperative MA program in TEFL and the Diploma Program in TEFL. Ms. Niakaris has also written several EFL textbooks and has provided strong support to the ELT community in Greece through her participation in an extensive outreach program for teachers of English in both private and state school sectors. More recently, Ms. Niakaris has been involved in research projects related to teacher education and test development as well as the development of a graduate program in Applied Linguistics offered by the Hellenic American University beginning in the Fall of 2006.

Menelaos Makrigiannis

Mr. Menelaos Makrigiannis holds a Masters of Science with distinction in Data Communication and Software, and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Central England in Birmingham. He also has a Bachelor Degree in Electronics Engineering from the same university. Mr. Makrigiannis is currently employed at a large organisation as a Senior Unified Communications Engineer. Within his current areas of responsibilities he works as a Project Manager for a variety of projects in the voice and data communications field. In addition, during the previous year he taught the Cisco CCNP Program at the Hellenic American Union. Previously Mr. Makrigiannis was employed as a Senior Lecturer within the Technology Innovation Centre (TIC) department of the University of Central England in Birmingham (UCE). He acted as a course director and he was one of the members of the development team for new courses. In addition he had external responsibilities as a consultant for Small/Medium Enterprises within the West Midland’s area to implement and design networks, ensuring efficient business support and application response for the Technology Innovation Centre’s customer base. In England, he has also worked with the Open University and the Josiah Maison College, as an associate lecturer. Mr. Makrigiannis is a Cisco Instructor for a number of courses; he is a member of the IET and he has a number of Cisco certifications.

Jonathan Markel, Ph.D.

Dr Markel is translator and freelance interpreter with the European Institutions, Council of Europe and U.S. Department of State. He is instructor in conference interpretation, Master 2 in Conference Interpretation and Translation Program offered by the Hellenic American Union in cooperation with the University of Strasbourg, as well as in the Master of Arts in Translation Program at the Hellenic American University. Dr Markel holds an MA in Education, Bosphorus University, Istanbul; M.Phil / PhD in Turkish Literature, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London; Diploma in Conference Interpretation and Translation, Georgetown University.

Popi Notia, PhD Candidate

Popi Notia is the Coordinator of all Translation and Interpretation Programs of the Center for Applied Linguistics and Language Studies, Coordinator of the Center for Applied Linguistics and Language Studies at the Hellenic American Union, as well as Coordinator of the Master of Arts in Translation program at the Hellenic American University. She holds the Diploma in Translation of the Institute of Linguists, UK and the MA in Translation of Birmingham University, UK and is currently attending the PhD in Applied Lingusitics of the Hellenic American University.
She has been a translator and interpreter for over 25 years. She has translated texts from nearly all sciences from and into Greek and has acted as an interpreter in Greece, England and the United States of America. She coordinates, plans and develops all new translation and interpretation courses at the Hellenic American Union and she is a teacher trainer and an instructor teaching practical and theoretical aspects of translation at all Programs, including the Post graduate Program in Translation and Interpretation offered at the Hellenic American Union in cooperation with the University of Strasbourg.

Yiannis Petropoulos, MA

Mr. Petropoulos received his BA in English Literature from the American College of Greece. He holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Comparative Literature and a MA in 19th and 20th century English and American Literature from the University of Essex, UK. He also holds a Diploma in Shipping from Morley College, London. Mr. Petropoulos has been teaching English as a foreign and second language for twenty five years. For the last fifteen years he has been teaching College level English Writing, Creative Writing, Fiction, Literary Analysis, Critical Thinking, and Business Communications. His field also includes oral communication and effective interpersonal communication skills in business. In cooperation with the Hellenic American Union he has been teaching corporate seminars in the field of oral and written communication skills for the last five years. Currently, Mr. Petropoulos is responsible for the Writing Program at the Hellenic American University.

Petros Romeos, Ph.D.

Freelance interpreter and translator, instructor at the Master 2 in Conference Interpretation and the DU in Translation and Interpretation offered by the Hellenic American Union in cooperation with the University of Strasbourg. Holds the Diploma in Conference Interpreting, Ionian University, Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting. Holds a Diploma in Bilingual Translation, Institut Francais d’ Athenes and a Translation Certificate of the University of Mons Hainaut, Belgium. He is a PhD candidate in Geopolitics, Ionian University. He translates for Ermias publications and works as a freelance interpreter in Greece and abroad, and has worked for major Greek public and private institutions.

Yorgo Seferlis, Ph.D.

Yorgo Seferlis studied at the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting of the Ionian University (Corfu, Greece). Specialization in Interpreting. He was granted an Erasmus scholarship and studied at the Higher Institute of Translation and Interpretation [Institut Supérieur de Traduction et Interprétation (ISTI)] (Brussels, Belgium). Dr Seferlis trained in parallel as an Intern Interpreter at the Greek Booth of the EU Council of Ministers and the European Commission (Brussels, Belgium). He studied at DEA (Master’s) level at the Department of Applied Foreign Languages [Département de Langues Étrangères Appliquées] of the Paul Valéry III University (Montpellier, France]. Alongside professional activities, he also engaged in an international research project in Dialogue Interpreting, supervised by the Centre for Translation and Interpreting in Scotland (CTIIS) and operating under the Heriot-Watt University Management and Languages Department (Edinburgh, Scotland, UK). Dr Seferlis was officially awarded a PhD in Translation, Interpreting and Communication Studies from the Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh, Scotland, UK).

Dimitris Tolias, MA

Mr. Dimitris Tolias is the Associate Director of the Center for Applied Linguistics and Language Studies at the Hellenic American Union Athens, Greece and University Librarian.

He holds a BA (Literature and Linguistics) from the University of Athens, and an MA (Applied Linguistics) from the University of Exeter, UK. He is also a PhD candidate at the University of Athens, School of Philosophy English Department.

From 1991 to 2001, he taught writing and research courses at the American College of Greece (Deree College). From 1995 to 1999 he also taught writing and methodology courses at the English Department of the University of Athens.

He is the author and co-author of a number of course books on the teaching of Greek as a Foreign/Second Language. He is also co-author and editor-in-chief of a handbook (under publication) for teachers of Greek as a Foreign Language.

He has been involved in a number of Research Programs: Coctale Program (Funded by the European Union); Foreign Language Testing Standards & Production of on-line language Tests, Hellenic American Union – Distance Learning Programs; Development of an online platform for the teaching of Greek as a foreign language; Design of an online test development mechanism for foreign languages; Development of an interactive web based help system for distance learning applications.

Ioannis Tselikas, Ph.D. Candidate

Ioannis Tselikas was born in Athens, Greece in 1973. He studied Harmony and Counterpoint in the Atheneum Conservatory (degrees: 1994, 1996), Piano in the National Conservatory (Diploma: 1997), Oboe in the Athens Conservatory (Diploma: 1999). He also studied Musicology in the University of Athens (Bachelor: 1996). He continued his studies in Boston University in 1999 being a Ph.D. candidate in the dual degree program of music history and theory. He has completed his coursework, and he has passed the qualification exams. At the moment he is in the writing process of his dissertation entitled “Nikos Skalkotas, An analysis of his chamber music for winds and piano.”

He has taught harmony, counterpoint, music history and theory, analysis and oboe in several Greek conservatories. During 2006 he was a facilitator for the course of History of American Music, in the Music Education Distance Program. He is also a member of the Athens Municipality Orchestra.

Sam Abadir, PhD.

Sam Abadir holds a Ph.d. in International Politics from the Centre d’Etudes Diplomatiques et strategiques.

His research interests focus on the area of international services marketing.

Chris Candlin

Before joining Macquarie as Professor of Linguistics and Head of Department in 1987, Chris was Professor of Applied Linguistics at Lancaster University in the UK. At Macquarie he established and was Executive Director of the National Centre for English Language Teaching & Research (NCELTR) and first Director of the Centre for Language in Social Life (CLSL), and with colleagues re-developed and revitalized the undergraduate and graduate curricula. From 1998-2002 he was Chair Professor of Applied Linguistics at The City University of Hong Kong and directed the Faculty Research Centre in English Language Education & Communication Research. He returned to Macquarie in 2002 to take up a halftime position as Senior Research Professor in Linguistics. He holds Honorary Professorships at the Universities of Lancaster, Nottingham and Cardiff in the UK, and is currently Leverhulme Visiting Professor in Health Communication Research at Cardiff, and part-time Professor of Applied Linguistics in the Centre for Language & Communication at The Open University (UK).

 

Willis Edmondson, Ph.D.

Visiting Professor Edmondson was Professor of Applied Linguistics and Language Teaching (‘Sprachlehrforschung’) at the University of Hamburg till 2005, and afterwards Professor of English (Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition) at the University of Hebron, West Bank, Palestine. He was active in writing and evaluating CALL materials in the early eighties. Another early project financed by the German Research Council on ‘Communicative Competence as the Goal of Language Teaching’ (1976- 1980) led to some 15 publications by him. The standard introduction to ‘Sprachlehrforschung’ is Edmondson/House 2000. He initiated and to a large extent wrote the materials for the project ‘How to Learn Foreign Languages: a Web-Site’ (<www.uni-hamburg.de/Fremdsprachenlernen>). His research therefore has been inter alia involved with discourse analysis theory, the bases of communicative language teaching, second language acquisition theory, and many aspects of language teaching principle and practice. His circa 140 publications include the following books in English: A Pedagogic Grammar of the English Verb, Spoken Discourse: a Model for Analysis, Twelve Lectures on Second Language Acquisition.

 

Diane-Larsen Freeman, Ph.D.

Diane Larsen Freeman is Director of the English Language Institute, Professor of Education and Professor of Linguistics at the University of Michigan, USA. As part of the course sequence for the ESL Endorsement, she teaches a graduate course entitled Educational Linguistics, which introduces K-12 teachers to issues of language and its learning and which will help teachers address the needs of English language learners in their classrooms. Widely traveled, she has delivered plenary addresses at conferences in over sixty countries around the world. In her most recent book, Teaching Languages: From Grammar to Grammaring, she argues that language needs to be conceived and taught as a dynamical system. In a co-authoredbook, forthcoming from Oxford University Press, Complex Systems and Applied Linguistics, she extends the notion of language as a dynamical system to language acquisition and development, classroom interaction, and the analysis of discourse. She received her doctorate in linguistics from the University of Michigan in 1975, and has previously served on the faculties at U.C.L.A. and the School for International Training, where she was Interim Dean prior to her arrival in Ann Arbor in January 2002.

 

Basil Hatim, Ph.D.

Visiting Professor Hatim received his Ph.D. from Exeter University in the UK on Models of Discourse Analysis: An Applied Linguistic Perspective. Professor of Translation & Linguistics, Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh (1980-1999). Professor of English & Translation, the American University of Sharjah, UAE (1999-2006). Authored a number of key books on Translation as intercultural communication, including Discourse and the Translator (with Ian Mason) (Longman 1990), Communication Across Cultures (Exeter University Press, 1997), Teaching & Researching Translation (Longman 2002); Translation: An Advanced Resource Book (with Jeremy Munday) (Routledge 2004). This is in addition to over 50 articles in refereed international journals, and numerous invited lectures and seminars in the UK, Europe and around the globe. Main research interests: Translation and translator/interpreter training, Intercultural Communication, TESOL, Discourse and Genre Analysis.

 

Ian Mason, Ph.D.

Position: Professor of Interpreting and Translation (1994-2006). Director, Centre for Translation and Interpreting Studies in Scotland (1994-2005) Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh, UK.

Teaching: Ian Mason has taught translating, interpreting and Translation and Interpreting Studies on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at Heriot Watt University. He also plays a major role in the School of Management and Languages PhD programme in translation, communication and discourse.

Research: He is co-author (with Basil Hatim) of Discourse and the Translator (Longman 1990) and The Translator as Communicator (Routledge 1997). He is also editor of Dialogue Interpreting, special issue of The Translator, (vol. 5 no. 2, 1999) and of Triadic Exchanges. Studies in Dialogue Interpreting (St. Jerome 2001). His current research focuses on interactional issues in various modes of translating and on the pragmatics of dialogue interpreting. He is a member of the Editorial Board of The Translator.

Nasrullah Memon, Ph.D.

Dr. Nasrullah Memon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Esbjerg Institute of Technology, Aalborg University Esbjerg, Denmark. He is currently Visiting Assistant Professor at the Hellenic American University Athens, Greece. Dr. Memon received his Ph.D. inthe area of Knowledge Discovery in databasesin 2007. His current research interests include investigative data mining, information extraction, terrorism informatics and social network analysis. He has published more than 50 papers in major international database and data mining conferences and journals. He is serving as a PC member of various database conferences and workshops. He has also serving as a symposium chair/ co-chair of International Symposium on Open Source Intelligence and Web Mining 2008. He has co-authored textbooks entitled The Art of C Programming and MS Access and Mathematics for class III. Nowadays he is co-editing a book titled Mathematical Methods in Counterterrorism (Springer).

 

James Purpura

James Purpura is Associate Professor of Linguistics and Education in the TESOL and Applied Linguistics Programs at Teachers College, Columbia University. Besides directing the TESOL Program, he teaches courses in language assessment and research design. His books include Learner strategy use and performance on L2 tests: A SEM approach (1999, CUP), Assessing grammar (2004, CUP). He also has articles in journals, edited volumes. He received the ILTA Best Paper in Language Testing for his article on Learner on strategy use and L2 test performance. Having been on the editorial advisory board of several journals, he is currently associate editor of Language Assessment Quarterly and is on the EAB of the Teachers College Working Papers in TESOL and Applied Linguistics and the University of Sidney Papers in TESOL. Jim is an “expert” member of the European Association of Language Testing and Assessment). He is currently the President of the International Language Testing Association (ILTA).

 

Phil Scholfield

Since 1995, Dr. Scholfield has been Senior Lecturer in Applied Linguistics in the Department of Language and Linguistics at the University of Essex. He has taught various modules, and is involved in research with his many PhD students. Currently he is in charge of the MA in English Language Teaching and has a research group of around 18 PhD students, as well as being Director of Graduate Admissions for the Department.

Paul Thurman, MBA

Professor Thurman, a Columbia MBA valedictorian, service award winner, and multiple teaching award recipient, has extensive management consulting and line management experience helping a variety of Fortune 500 firms realize value from innovative and coordinated business, operations, and technology strategies. He has held senior positions at Booz Allen Hamilton and American Express and has served public and private sector clients on five continents.

Paul has consulted to several global financial services, health care, retail, and consumer products firms across a broad set of business disciplines. His consulting work has focused mostly on analytical modeling to support strategic planning and decision-making, corporate cost management, and technology and business integration. He has also developed solutions around customer segmentation, demand modeling, profitability, and experience mapping. He currently runs his own general management and executive education consultancy and is a frequent conference presenter.

Paul currently teaches strategic management and data analysis courses at Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs and at its Joseph L. Mailman School of Public Health. He also serves as Executive Director of the Columbia University Alliance for Healthcare Management, coordinating research, academic, and industry programs among Columbia’s graduate schools of Public Health, Medicine, and Business. Paul has also taught courses in decision, risk, and operations in the full-time and Executive MBA Programs at the Columbia, London, and University of California, Berkeley business schools, and is a Senior Research Fellow and Permanent Visiting Professor at the Hellenic American University in Athens, Greece, and at the SKOLKOVO Moscow School of Management, in Russia.

In addition to his faculty appointments, Paul serves as a clinical professor and affiliated researcher at the National Cancer Institute's Center for Cancer Research at the National Institutes of Health. His recent peer-reviewed research has focused on scientific collaboration and its effect on research quality, and also on cancer drug patents, FDA approvals, and market pricing. He is the author of MBA Fundamentals of Statistics, (Kaplan, 2008), Pocket Guide to Data Analysis (Kaplan, 2009), and co-author (with Thomas P. Ference) of MBA Fundamentals of Business Strategy (Kaplan, 2009). He is also co-editor, with colleagues from Greece, of Female Immigrant Entrepreneurs, a research compendium, to be published in late 2009 by Gower (UK).

Finally, Paul is on the board of the Greenburgh (New York) Nature Center, the Scarsdale (New York) Teen Center, and sits on the advisory boards of a number of entrepreneurial ventures including a cancer drug development and marketing alliance, a Boston-based high technology firm, and a Minneapolis-based sports marketing and advertising firm. Paul received his BS in mathematics (honors) from Stanford University and his MBA (highest honors) from Columbia. He is currently completing his doctorate in public health policy and management at the State University of New York (Brooklyn).

Maria Rosario Carrillo, MA

Mrs. Carrillo holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Classical Philology from the University of Seville (Spain) and a MA in Pedagogy from the Spanish National Pedagogic Institute. She specialized in Ancient Greek Classical Poetry and Western Literary Genres, subjects that she was teaching in Spain for five years. Mrs. Carrillo was teacher of Spanish Translation at the French Institute of Athens in collaboration with the University of Strasburg. For the last eight years she is a teacher of Spanish as Foreign Language and also official examiner for the DELE (certificate in Spanish as Foreign Language) of the University of Salamanca. Mrs. Carrillo has collaborated in several books of philological content and in the edition of the «New Greek-Spanish Dictionary» (Texto Editions. Athens,2006). As well, she has translated into Spanish works by Greek authors such as Thanasis Valtinos and Ioanna Karystiani.

Yiannos Contrafouris, Ph.D.

Yiannos Contrafouris was awarded his PhD from the University of London in the field of Management and Business Studies in 2005. The focus of his research was the emergence of innovation in the pharmaceutical sector and the study of factors in the management process that might affect it. He holds an MSc in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology from the University of Kent, UK and a BSc in Biochemistry and Biotechnology from the same University. Dr Contrafouris has worked in London-based Thomson Scientific for a number of years, mainly as a team leader involved in providing pharmaceutical intelligence services to biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies worldwide. He is currently working in the private sector, managing the implementation of a number of European Commission projects in the field of science and technology communication.

Nigel Downey, MA

Mr. Nigel Downey is currently Head of Teacher Education in the Center for Applied Linguistics and Language Studies at the Hellenic American Union. He is also Coordinator for Testing Development at the Hellenic American University. He has the RSA Diploma (DELTA), an MA in TEFL from St. Michael’s College, Vermont, USA, and is researching for his PhD in Applied Linguistics from Lancaster University, UK, specializing in Testing.

He has been in the EFL profession in Greece for nearly twenty years. He has taught at language schools in Veria, Mytilene and Piraeus, as well as for the British Council in Athens. He has been a teacher trainer for the past seven years and has taught on the MA in TESOL summer program at St. Michael’s College, USA as Visiting Professor over the past four years.

He has also written and collaborated on a number of books and articles, as well as participating strongly in the Hellenic American Union outreach program for EFL teachers, both in Greece and abroad. He is also a member of TESOL Greece, and has been Secretary General for two consecutive years and recently was its Treasurer.

At present, He is engaged in projects relating to testing and teacher education, and is also collaborating on the development of an MA in Applied Linguistics program for the Hellenic American University.

Ioannis Gatzoflias, Ph.D.

He has acquired working and academic experience in multinational environments. He holds a PhD from the department of Economics of Stirling University on the area of Financial Innovation. He received his Msc with distinction in Banking and Finance, from the same University and a BA Hns from Anglia University. He has teaching experience from Stirling University and is currently involved in the distance learning MSc and MBA of Surrey and Leicester University, in Athens. He provided seminars in the areas of Economics, Finance and Accounting.

He has a business experience in the Banking sector as he has served as Head of Banking trends, Economic Analysis and Project Management of Egnatia Bank Strategic Analysis Division. He also holds the position of Deputy Chief Financial Officer in Emporiki Credicom Bank (Credit Agricole Group).

Lampros Kalyvas, Ph.D.

Dr. Kalyvas received his Ph.D. in Market Risk Management from the University of Macedonia, Greece. He also holds an M.Sc. in International Banking and Financial Studies from the University of Southampton, UK. He is currently employed in the Bank of Greece as Risk Analyst and in the University of Ioannina as visiting Lecturer, while, in the past, he was Head Officer in the Hellenic Central Securities Depository. Dr. Kalyvas holds a Market Maker / Trader certificate and a Derivatives Knowledge certificate from Athens Derivatives Exchange. His work has been published in many journals, conferences and newspapers and he is one of the authors of the book “Integrating Market, Credit and Operational Risk: A guide for bankers and risk professionals” published by RiskBooks, UK. His research interests are related to banking regulation, financial engineering and risk management.

Michalis Katsouros, MSc

Michalis Katsouros received his BEng degree (1st Class Honors) in Electrical Engineering & Electronics from Warwick University in the UK in 2000, MSc degree in Electronic Instrumentation Systems in 2001 and MSc degree in Operations Management in 2002 from the former University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) in the UK, and expects to be awarded with his International MBA degree in 2007 from the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), for which he is still working on a Marketing and Business Strategy field study project in the Sports Industry. He is currently working for IBM Hellas as a Consultant specializing mainly in Marketing and CRM projects. He has also worked in the Operations and Marketing departments of Nestlé Hellas, and in the Marketing department of Germanos Group. He has published internationally papers in the areas of management of change, privatisation and competition, as well as in the engineering fields of tomography and nanotechnology, for which he has received special scholarships and awards.

Charalambos Kollias, MA

Mr. Charalambos Kollias is a teacher, teacher trainer, and a test developer for the Center for Applied Linguistics and Language Studies at the Hellenic American Union. He is also Coordinator for Testing Development at the Hellenic American University. He has an MA in TESL from St. Michael’s College, Vermont, USA.

Ioanna Kopsiafti, D.Phil, M.Litt.

Ioanna Kopsiafti receivedher D.Phil from Oxford University (Department of Art History, thesis onErnst Cassirer), M.Litt. fromSt. Andrews University (Department of Art History, thesis on Caravaggio) and her BAfrom Wofford College (Double major in History of Art and Philosophy). She has been teaching in Athens and Rome since 2000in variousuniversity programs including the Universities of Loyola Marymount andChicago, the University of Delaware, the Athens Centre andNew York College where she was also Director of Student Affairs for 3 years. She heads various study abroad programs and cultural toursfor an international educational tour companyin Lucerne andworksas a free lance journalistand regular contributor to the weekly paper Athens News. She is the author of the guideStyle City Athens,published in 2006 by Thames & Hudson andthe forthcoming book of her solo peace walk in 2006from Athens to Istanbul.

Nicos Kourounakis, PMP, MBA

Nicos Kourounakis has worked in the IT sector in Canada and Greece both in large corporations (www.mda.ca) and in smaller ventures and start-ups. Working with Eworx in Athens, he has been responsible for managing international IT projects with the European Foundation for he Improvement of Living & Working Conditions (EuroFound), the European Network & Information Security Agency (ENISA), the Hellenic American Union and the Greek Ombudsman. He is also the Product Manager for three of Eworx's new software products. He teaches Project Management at the MBA program of the Hellenic American University. His research experience and interests include Artificial Intelligence, Project Management, Maturity Models and Strategic Management.

Nicos Kourounakis holds an MBA from McGill University, Montreal, Canada, a M.A.Sc in Electrical Engineering from the University ofVictoria, Canada, and a B.Sc. in Physics from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Nicos is also a PMI Certified OPM3 Assessor and Consultant and a PMP since 2002.

Elisabeth Kounougeri Petsetaki

Elisabeth Kounougeri Petsetaki is a senior lecturer at the Department of Health Services, in the National School of Public Health of Greece where she teaches health services management at the postgraduate program. As a health educator in the US she directed programs in health promotion and education for school age children. She was involved in the efforts of tobacco control in California. In addition she directed health education programs for cancer patients under treatment, rehabilitation and long term care. In Greece she works in the field of developing human resources and improving management capacity in health services organizations. She played a strategic role in developing the health services management program from its inception. She is involved in a variety of European collaborative programs in infrastructure development in public health, curriculum development in health services management, health promotion, health education, management of health services, interregional health, European health reforms, European enlargement and health, public health policies and the health of the elderly. She has taught at the University of Helsinki Department of Primary Health in their international Health Management and Leadership post graduate program. Currently she is involved in developing a tobacco control strategy for Greece, developing an assessment tool and intervention for the fire victims and assessing the access to care for vulnerable populations. She is an active member of the European Health Management Association (EHMA), and serves on the Scientific Advisory Committee. She is also an active member of the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER). She has served on the editorial board of the Health Policy Journal and is currently on the editorial board of the Health and Society Journal (Greek). She received her BA in Biology from Rice University, Houston, Texas and her MPH from the School of Public Health of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She is a PhD candidate at the University of Helsinki. 

Georgia Valaoras, Ph.D.

Dr. Georgia Valaoras studied chemistry, science education and environmental management in the United States. She earned a D.Sc. from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Her doctoral research dealt with an analysis of airborne fine particulate matter in Athens, Greece. She then worked at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for five years, concentrating on risk assessment for toxic chemicals, pesticides and hazardous waste sites. In 1989, she returned to Greece to establish the national organization of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-Greece), which she directed for six years.She has fifteen years of teaching experience at the secondary,undergraduate and graduate school levels.She also has been a consultant for TRAFFIC Europe, the wildlife monitoring unit of WWF and IUCN, and currently works as the external monitoring expert forthe LIFE programme of the European Union Environment Directorate,which fundsenvironment and nature projects in Greece.

Lyn Waldie, MA TESOL

Lyn Waldie has a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of New Hampshire and an MA in TESOL from the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. She taught at universities in Mexico, Poland and Bulgaria before coming to the Hellenic-American Union in 1997 as a teaching fellow with the USIA. At the Hellenic-American Union she taught English in the University of Strasbourg program, and teaches an annual methodological workshop on English for Specific Purposes with the University of Athens. Prior to receiving her MA she was a Peace Corps volunteer in Tunisia working on Women in Development Projects (WID) with the Ministry of Education. She has also been an academic advisor and coordinator of cultural events in the Native American Program at Dartmouth College.

Her primary research area is in cross-cultural communication and how different cultural paradigms can cause miscommunication. She has held workshops and given presentations, both in Greece and in Turkey, on cross-cultural awareness and cross-cultural considerations in speech acts. Her publications include a book on living in Greece and she is co-author of two ELT books
