Each student is expected to meet with his/her mentor at least twice each term to review academic progress, seek advice, solve problems and plan for future studies or professional development.
Mentoring is an integral part of education at the Hellenic American University and its purpose is to guide students toward success by the timely completion of their studies as well as the identification and fulfillment of their academic goals. Academic advising is especially important when a student enters the program, when a student experiences academic difficulty, including probation and possibility of expulsion, and when a student is close to graduation and is working on his/her capstone project or dissertation.
While Hellenic American University and mentors have specific responsibilities, which are mentioned below, students also play an acting part in the advising relationship. They are expected to initiate contact with their mentors, make final decisions about academic matters and accept responsibility for the consequences of decisions made.
Faculty mentor responsibilities are:
- to clarify, plan and help determine the student's educational and career goals
- to identify academic skills that need to be acquired or enhanced to achieve these educational goals
- to increase the student's awareness of the full range of campus programs and services (library and computer lab use, IT or language courses, etc)
- to provide the student with accessible mentoring services by scheduling and maintaining regular office hours
- to recognize problems that might affect the student's academic performance
- to refer students to the appropriate campus support services when needed (Financial Aid, Writing Center, etc)
Hellenic American University staff responsibilities are:
- to coordinate orientation programs for new students (orientation week)
- to provide the students with their assignments to faculty mentors, their office hours, and where their offices are located
- to explain, in detail, the rules and regulations stated in the student handbook, upon request
Student responsibilities are:
- to be familiar with the Hellenic American University policies and procedures as outlined in the student handbook and class schedules
- to explore academic programs according to their personal development and career goals
- to maintain high academic performance, and seek assistance to develop a plan of action when academic performance declines
- to ask for assistance when needed
The Hellenic American University places great emphasis on the development of students' personal skills. Each student is expected to manage his/her learning process and be able to work both independently and as a group member. |
