Objectives for the PhD program

The objectives of the PhD program are to:

  • Provide students with a critical understanding of what Applied Linguistics currently entails and the ability to identify emerging issues
  • Further develop students’ ability to synthesize fundamental concepts into theories and critically evaluate multiple perspectives within the field of Applied Linguistics
  • Enable students to apply fundamental theoretical knowledge in diverse professional settings
  • Provide students with research opportunities in an expanding area of theory and practice at the interface of linguistics and social context, including interactional sociolinguistics, text linguistics, genre theory, and critical discourse analysis
  • Instill students with cultural sensitivity as well as research and professional ethical principles
  • Establish Information Technology Literacy as a basis for learning in the field of Applied Linguistics

Description

The PhD Program in Applied Linguistics: Discourse in English Language Teaching, Testing or Translation/Interpreting is globally focused, interculturally informed and professional in orientation. It consists of classes and seminars on-site, on-line guided support, and a dissertation that involves the design and implementation of a field-based or workplace-related research project. The program provides advanced-level training in the academic study of a range of language- and culture-related issues through initial coursework, and substantial research components, with classes envisaged to become a learning environment through taught courses and on-line communication between student and tutor and student with other students. The Program is intended for a broad range of working professionals in a variety of occupational fields, but is specifically designed for practitioners who work in the Teaching of English to Speakers of other Languages (TESOL), English language testing or translation/interpreting (with English as the source or target language).
