The ALCE provides recognized certification that the holder can communicate at an advanced level in English, either in a professional or academic environment. The test represents a level of competency roughly between the University of Michigan Examination for the Certificate of Competency in English (ECCE) and the University of Michigan Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE).
The ALCE has been shown to aim at the C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) through extensive research leading to a Claim by Specification and Standardization, submitted to the Council of Europe.
