Financial Aid & Scholarships

Introduction

The Hellenic American University is committed to helping students with exceptional promise enroll and succeed in their quest to acquire knowledge, understanding and competencies that will make a difference. Until independent scholarship support in Greece is identified, the University will provide tuition remission in exchange for student participation in appropriate institutional work. The Hellenic American University offers limited teaching and research assistantships or work study to qualified students. Current and prospective undergraduate students may apply for consideration for work-study support, and graduate students may apply for laboratory, research and admissions assistantships. Selected students may have up to 30% of tuition waived in exchange for agreed on work during the year. Awards may be renewed in subsequent years.

Scholarships are offered to exceptionally qualified students, both domestic and international. Interested students should contact the Admissions Office for more information.

Financial Planning

The Hellenic American University can help students apply for student loans from financial institutions. Special financial arrangements are possible for employers who wish to finance their employees’ educational program.

Allocation of Aid

Up to 10% of the students in each of the programs of the University may be awarded up to 30% of their tuition in the form of work study or assistantships in each distinct Masters and Undergraduate program. Full-tuition and partial tuition scholarships may be awarded to qualified students by the university from its own resources or from special funds created for this purpose.

Students must submit an official request for financial aid by contacting the Financial Aid Office and completing a Financial Aid Application (see below). The Admissions Committee for each program may also make recommendations concerning financial aid. The Financial Aid Committee will consider all applications and supporting documents, and will then determine the final awards.

If all of the potential awards are not made in the fall term each year, the Provost may determine that those funds can be used for students in other programs. The Executive Vice-President may determine that more tuition remission is to be awarded in any term.

Engage students in learning and thinking about music literature and its performance.
Emphasize a deep understanding of music and foster a critical engagement with important musical works.
Include innovative general education courses, establishing common ground between disciplines.
Offer liberal arts courses intended to develop critical thinking and communications skills essential for future participation in the global community of culture creators.

Learning Outcomes

Core Curriculum

In order to develop a basic foundation for work and continuing growth as a music professional, students (in accordance with the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) guidelines [2007-2008]) will:

Acquire technical skills requisite for artistic self-expression, in at least one major performance area at a level appropriate for the particular music concentration.
Develop knowledge and skills related to basic piano keyboard instruction including basic keyboard techniques and fingering; scales, triads, seventh chords; progression and resolution of diatonic and chromatic chords; harmonization of melodies; transposition of chord progressions to different keys; arpeggios.
Develop knowledge of the history of music through the present time including the repertory of various periods and cultures in their major performance area.
Acquire the ability to perform from a cross-section of the music from the repertory of the major performance area.
Develop knowledge and skills in music theory and ear training including traditional harmony and part writing, 20th Century musical techniques, and sight reading at a skill level relevant to professional standards appropriate for the particular music specialization.
Acquire and apply rehearsal techniques and conducting skills at a level appropriate to the particular music concentration.
Achieve growth in artistry, technical skills, collaborative competence and knowledge of repertory through regular ensemble experiences.
Acquire an understanding of the common elements and organizational patterns of music and their interaction; the ability to employ this understanding in aural, verbal, and visual analyses and in aural dictation.
Employ their knowledge of musical forms, processes and structures in composition, performance, analysis, and research according to the requisites of their specialization.
Acquire a rudimentary capacity to create imitative or original music both extemporaneously and in written form.
Develop knowledge and skills in the use of technology as it applies to notating, arranging, and composing music.
Acquire the ability to solve musical problems by synthesis of the foregoing skills.
Demonstrate achievement of professional, entry-level competence in the major area, including significant technical mastery.
Form and defend value judgments about music.
Communicate musical ideas and concepts to professionals and lay persons related to the practice of the area of specialization.

Music Performance

Development of the essential competencies associated with each major will be accomplished through specific courses and by the creation of experiences that allow for integration of the knowledge and skills acquired in the program.

In the area of music performance, students will:

Develop advanced performance skills in the major performing medium as a soloist, as a member of an ensemble, or as a member of an orchestra.
Acquire the ability to work independently to prepare performances at the highest possible level.
Acquire skills in foreign language and diction (essential for voice majors).
Acquire advanced rehearsal and conducting techniques (for conducting concentration)
Acquire an orientation to the fundamentals of pedagogy.

Theory and Composition

In the area of theory and composition, students will:

Acquire advanced capabilities in musical analysis including the ability to produce and discuss analytical work from an independent perspective.
Acquire an understanding of the relationships between theory and composition. This includes original and imitative work in composition, as well as a basic understanding of the relationships among musical structure, aesthetic effect, and cultural context.
Acquire the ability to use the tools of theoretical work including keyboard skills, spoken and written language, research techniques, and applicable technologies.
Achieve the highest possible level of skill in the use of basic concepts, tools, techniques, and procedures to develop a composition from concept to a complete work. This includes the composition of solo and various ensemble pieces.
Acquire fluency in the use of tools needed by composers including keyboard skills, spoken and written language, conducting and rehearsal skills, analytical techniques, and applicable technologies.
Achieve a level of competence that prepares them for graduate studies in the area of music theory and composition.

The primary objective of the BM program is to provide comprehensive professional training for young talented musicians. The program welcomes students who have a musical background and have already attended music courses in a conservatory or in a music high school. The development of comprehensive musicianship in all students is fundamental to the objectives and success of this program. Students have the opportunity to work and perform next to competitive, professional musicians of the highest quality, preparing them to become competent performers as much as educators. Through participation in, and exposure to, a wide variety of recitals and concerts, and through courses in music theory and composition, history and literature, and applied subjects involving state-of-the-art pedagogical systems and techniques Hellenic American University Music majors are trained to be effective and competitive in whatever musical direction their careers take them.

Athens (Greek "Αθήνα" - Athína) is the capital and largest city of Greece. With a population of over 5 million, its metropolitan area is the centre of the country's economic, financial, industrial, cultural and political life. It is a bustling, cosmopolitan city, but one that is steeped, at the same time, in thousands of years of history. Athens is widely acknowledged as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy, largely due to its extraordinary political and cultural achievements during the 5th and 4th centuries B.C.

Greece is on the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula, flanked on the north by Bulgaria, FYROM, and Albania; on the east by the Ionian Sea: on the west by the Aegean Sea and Turkey; and on the south by the Mediterranean. It is made up of the mainland, the Peloponnese (a peninsula connected to the southern tip of the mainland bythe Isthmus of Corinth) and over 3,000 islands. 2009 Class Notes

Charles Awuah-Adjapong, (MBA), works for K. Hager and Sons, in Athens, Greece, an orthopedic and medical supply company. Charles is a former banking official and has worked for K Hager and Sons, where he is in charge of marketing for the past six years. He looks forward for a challenging opportunity in healthcare management.

Vasilis Barbas (PMBA) is currently engaged in an IT migration project and he is attending Psychology Management courses at Athens Kapodistrian University. In his free time he is waiting for his German shepherd named "Cary" to give birth.

Bilge Kalkavan (MAAL) currently works as a Programme Officer at the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) in Tehran, Iran. Bilge graduated from Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey in 1995 with a BA degree in English Literature and then went on to achieve her MA degree in Applied Linguistics (Magna Cum Laude) from Hellenic American University in Athens in 2009. She has worked as an English teacher and a Research Assistant, and is married with three sons. She continues to travel and live in various countries including Romania, Germany, and Greece during her husband’s diplomatic mandates.

Biljana Kostovska (MBA) currently opened a consulting company in Skopje after her last engagement in FYROM’s embassy in Athens as an economic attaché. Her company focuses on activities in the fields of foreign investor’s local support and economic and financial analysis. In her free time she enjoys traveling and sports.

You can apply to Hellenic American University at any time during the year. Academic terms run for 12 weeks and normally begin in late September, January, and April of each year.

The Writing Center of the Hellenic American University is also open to the public. Using software and innovative equipment, the Writing Center offers its services online and onsite to anyone who seeks help with writing problems. Assistance is provided in both English and Greek.

Enterprise Network Administration (ASENA)

The program teaches the technical skills required to install, configure, operate and maintain a network. ASENA is a two-year degree program that prepares graduates for immediate entry into career paths in the field of network administration.

A total of 20 courses are required to complete the program. An academic year includes three terms and each term runs for 12 weeks. New classes start in September, January and April of each year. Courses, materials and faculty interaction are offered exclusively in English.

Students obtain high quality educational support for their further success and development in their business career; pursue professional vendor-specific certifications offered by Microsoft (MCDST) and CISCO (CCNA or Cisco Wireless LAN Support Specialist). Finally, graduates of the ASENA program can then complete the BSIT program in two years of fulltime study.

ASENA is addressed to candidates who want to enter a career path soon after secondary education. In addition, the program is designed for the needs of working professionals who wish to follow a career in network administration.

Sports & Fitness

The soccer team of Hellenic American University was founded in 2004 and participates in full-team tournaments (11 X 11). The season begins in September and ends in June. Games take place weekly at the Attica Football Park in Voula and Eleftherakis in Vari on Saturdays or Sundays. Every Wednesday the team has training sessions at the Puma Football Club in Agios Kosmas. The team has twice been awarded the Good Sportsmanship Award by the Independent Association of Athletic Teams in Attica in January and June 2007. Students interested in joining the team can send their inquiries to haufc@hau.gr or stop by the Office of Student Affairs for more information.

Plagiarism and Academic Honesty

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is defined as copying another student’s work, lending work to another student, or representing extracts or whole articles and texts from books or handouts as one’s own work. For more specific details about plagiarism and relevant university policies please see student handbooks.

Academic Honesty

Every student is expected to produce his/her own work product and will be judged on the merit of that product. If it is determined that a student has plagiarized another’s work, he or she will be subject to disciplinary action. Such action shall include but not be limited to: a failing grade on the work product, a failing grade in the course, or expulsion from the program. The severity of the action shall be jointly determined by the appropriate Professor and the Academic Standing Committee. The student shall have the right to appeal in writing to the Provost (or Academic Dean). All appeals must be made no later than four weeks from the communication of the Committee’s decision to the student. The decision of the Provost/Academic Dean is final.

The HAUniv student is expected to act in a responsible manner, as expected in a university setting, in all activities connected with his or her studies. Instances of cheating, lying, violating courses rules, copyright infringement, or damaging/destroying the University facilities or equipment violate the Code of Student Ethics. If it is determined, by a professor or other appropriate University official, that a student has acted unprofessionally, he or she will be subject to disciplinary action. Such action shall include but not be limited to: a failing grade on the work product, a failing grade in the course, or expulsion from the program. The severity of the action shall be jointly determined by the appropriate Professor and the Academic Standing Committee. The student shall have the right to appeal to the Provost (or Academic Dean) in writing, stating the reason for the appeal. A personal meeting with the Provost (or Academic Dean) may be arranged. The Provost’s (or Academic Dean’s) decision is final. All appeals must be made no later than four weeks from the date of the decision of the Academic Standing Committee or four weeks from the distribution of final grades.

Bachelor in English Language and Literature [BAELL]

The English Language and Literature degree program is a unique, state-of-the-art program in Athens that combines both the skills of foreign language teaching (ELT) and pedagogy with courses in literature, literary theory and translation. The Hellenic American University’s BAELL program offers students the opportunity to engage in learning and thinking about language, literature and writing through a Liberal Arts approach to a variety of course offerings across the disciplines. The major emphasizes a deep understanding of language, language usage, and a critical appreciation of important literary works from Shakespeare to the contemporary short story to classic American literary texts and ancient Greek drama. Courses in pedagogy and linguistics as well as the University’s effective Writing across the Curriculum philosophy will serve students interested in a broad range of professions.

For students interested in becoming teachers of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), the Hellenic American University’s BAELL degree provides an excellent pre-service education and exposure to canonical works of literature. Students also have the option of earning a Diploma in TESOL by taking specific language core courses in the BAELL, as well as courses for pre-service teachers that includes a practicum. For students interested in pursuing graduate and post-graduate work in the study of translation, linguistics, or literature, this degree offers a rich selection of courses that include the subject areas of Semiotics, Translation, Global Literature and Literary Critical Analysis. In an increasingly global market the importance of language and its professional uses has become vital to success, in response to this need, the BAELL offering was structured to meet the requirements of a world where courses such as “Professional Writing”, “Language and Technology” and “Language and Society” will be as rewarding and necessary to an aspiring Journalist and Market Manager as they would be to an English Language Teacher, a Translator, and a Literary or Drama Critic.

Bachelor in Science of Information Technology [BSIT]

Hellenic American University offers a challenging and innovative Information Technology academic program that combines technology, science and business studies. The BSIT program prepares students for a successful career in Information Technology and for leadership in their prospective field.

A total of 41 courses plus a Capstone Project (126 credits) are required for the BSIT degree. Full-time students may complete the program in 12 terms, while part-time students will need 4 to 5 years to complete their degree, depending on the number of courses taken each term. An academic year includes three terms; each term runs for 12 weeks. New classes start in October, January and April of each year. Instruction usually includes series of lectures, workshops and seminars, while assessment is based on homework assignments, individual projects, laboratory work, and examinations.

The BSIT provides graduates with the necessary credentials to build a career in the fields of information technology, programming/software engineering, database administration, IT project management, network administration, IT security and artificial intelligence. In addition to the technology courses, students work with their mentors to select General Education courses; they may also elect to add a minor area of study. Students are thus provided with a well-rounded education in which they not only acquire professional skills, but also develop character, intellectual breadth, social skills and self-confidence. Finally, several courses allow students to pursue professional vendor-specific certifications as IT professional, software [or applications] developer, network specialist and project manager.

The program is designed for full time students and working professionals who wish to pursue a career in Information Technology.

The total tuition for the PhD program for the entering class of 2010-2011 is €30,160 for the 58 academic credits-520 euros per credit-that comprise the degree. Tuition is subject to change.

Master of Business Administration (MBA)

The total tuition for the MBA program for the entering class of 2010-2011 is €14,045 for the 53 academic credits that comprise the degree. Costs are prorated on the basis of €795 per 3 credit course. Students who do not complete the MBA Degree within 2 years may be subject to an increase in tuition.

Professional Master of Business Administration (PMBA)

The total tuition for the Professional MBA program for the entering class of 2010-2011 is €16,080 for the 48 academic credits that comprise the degree. Course costs are prorated on the basis of €1.005 per 3 credit course. Students who do not complete the Professional MBA Degree within 2 years may be subject to an increase in tuition.

MA in Applied Linguistics (MAAL)

The total tuition for the MA in Applied Linguistics program for the entering class of 2010-2011 is €9,269 for the 39 academic credits that comprise the degree. Course costs are prorated on the basis of €1000 per 3 credit course. Students who do not complete the MSIT degree within 2 years may be subject to an increase in tuition.

The total tuition for the MA of Arts in Translation program for the entering class of 2010-2011 is €9,269 for the 39 academic credits that comprise the degree. Course costs are prorated on the basis of €713 per 3 credit course. Students who do not complete the MA in Translation Degree within 1 year may be subject to an increase in tuition.

Master of Arts in Conference Interpretation (MACI)

The total tuition for the MA of Arts in Translation program for the entering class of 2010-2011 is €9,269 for the 39 academic credits that comprise the degree. Course costs are prorated on the basis of €713 per 3 credit course. Students who do not complete the MA in Conference Interpretation Degree within 1 year may be subject to an increase in tuition.

Undergraduate Programs

The total tuition for the bachelor's degree is €19,530 (465 per 3-credit course or €155 per credit). Tuition is subject to change.
